Echoes  premiered at the Musikwoche Hitzacker 2025, hosted by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
Daan explores the element of earth—quite literally—by using stones as musical instruments. For this unique piece, he built a lithophone, an instrument made of carefully cut tiles of varying lengths to produce distinct tones. The resulting sound is bell-like, delicate, and imbued with a spiritual quality. This work is both sonically and conceptually distinctive: three lithophones are played in an ensemble, a rarity in contemporary music. The inspiration reaches deep into the past—into prehistoric times, when stones may have been used in rituals or for their acoustic properties. Monuments like Stonehenge suggest a mysterious relationship between sound, space, and stone.Wilms draws on these ancient resonances to experiment with the physical effect of echoes. He employs techniques such as phasing, where musicians play the same material at slightly different tempos, creating shifting sound patterns and auditory illusions. Echoes is not only explored here as an acoustic event, but as a poetic and immersive experience.
